MAKING CUSTODIANS

What will become of our material things when our own materiality has expired? What becomes of the object when the primary caretaker is gone? Exploring notions of heirloom objects, inalienability and custodianship, I seek to find ways to create a deeply engaging mental, kinaesthetic and emotional connection. That which we feel is inalienable has a preciousness that can’t be denied; it must be cared for and is greater than ourselves; it must remain ‘alive’ and passed on to others.

‘The expectant’ console captures the moment when the owner and the future custodian are one. Somewhat tongue-in-cheek the legs are distinctively anthropomorphic implying a stride, whilst the storage component is, in relation, an oversized belly with an extended ‘navel’ form acting as drawer pulls.
