PERFORMANCE REFLECTS NEW VIEWS

Oculus aims to embody Ballajura Community College’s philosophy of discovery through interaction, exploration, and investigation, and through ways of looking at the world and being in the world. The artwork is conceived as an oculus. It is both an object to observe and look at, while also an object to look through akin to an eye, and to observe the space beyond. By observing the object, space behind, through, and around are presented simultaneously from various angles.

Positioned between two walkways into the new Performing Arts Theatre, the angled reflective surfaces echo the way performance can enable the audience to see from a new perspective. Observers on one side become framed as the ‘observed’ from the other. The surfaces are dynamic, everchanging, and ‘act’ upon the observer as the surroundings move, and they themselves move through space.
